For the rest, they dreamed impractical ends.
Tuck salivated with his prospects. "I will buy ten barrels of ale from Ceolred and a tun of that red Norman wine. Then I'll be to Grantham for the finest relics to set into our altar when I'm home. And what will you do, John?"
Littlerede ruminated on the question. Such dreams weren't as simple for him as they might be for Tuck or young Much, who was feverishly building opulence from this promising start. When their troubles were done and the king pardoned them (as surely he must. Much reasoned), he would go up Nottingham dight in the best apparel a man could order, knock on the door of some wealthy merchant, and speak of investment. And if the merchant chanced to have a comely daughter, Much would dicker for a wife and so have rich in-laws. By God, he'd get on in this world. John pointed out that Much was only half free, bound to the land under Robin as ever he'd be under Normans, but Much accounted that no obstacle to a man of means.
